BMW E46 M3 FITMENT
The E46 M3 is one of the most celebrated driver's cars ever built — and one of the most challenging when it comes to wheel fitment. Its signature design feature is a set of dramatically flared rear fenders that are significantly wider than the front. Because of this, the E46 M3 requires a heavily staggered offset configuration — standard offsets up front and extremely low offsets in the rear — to achieve the flush, aggressive stance that defines this car. Getting this right is the difference between a car that looks like it was born with its wheels and one that looks like it's wearing hand-me-downs.
Quick Reference
Bolt Pattern: 5x120 | Center Bore: 72.56mm | Hub Type: Conical Seat | Lug Torque: 120 Nm (89 ft-lb)
19" Staggered — Maximum Aesthetics
A staggered 19-inch setup honors the legendary CSL and Competition Package heritage. This is the definitive E46 M3 look — flush in the front with a deep, concave rear wheel that fills the massive flared arches. To achieve this without thick wheel spacers, you need a wheel with a deep concave profile and a carefully calculated low rear offset.

19" Staggered Street
The defining E46 M3 look. Flush in the front, deep concavity in the rear.
- Recommended Front: 19x9 ET30
- Recommended Rear: 19x10 ET25
- Street Tires: 245/35R19 Front, 275/30R19 Rear
- Performance Tires: 255/35R19 Front, 285/30R19 Rear
Why this setup: The E46 M3's front fenders are relatively narrow, so a 9" wheel at ET30 provides a perfect flush fitment without rubbing at full steering lock. The rear is where the magic happens — the 10" wide wheel at ET25 sits deep inside the massive flared fender, creating that iconic concave, deep-dish appearance. The wider 275/285 rear tire gives the S54's 333 hp a proper contact patch, which is especially important given the E46 M3's tendency toward power oversteer at the limit. The 19" diameter shows off spoke design and wheel finish — which on a car this iconic, is a significant part of the visual package.
18" Square — Track Standard
For drivers focused on handling and track days, an 18-inch square setup is the performance standard for the E46 M3. Equal-width tires front and rear reduce understeer, allow front-to-rear tire rotation, and give access to the best 200TW track tires in the 265-width size.

18" Square Track Setup
The optimal track configuration for the E46 M3. Front camber plates are highly recommended to properly clear the 9.5" front wheel with sticky tires.
- Recommended Size: 18x9.5 ET35 all around
- Track Tires (200TW): 265/35R18 Square
- R-Compound: 275/35R18 Square
- Alignment Note: Run -2.5° to -3.5° front camber with adjustable camber plates (Turner, Ground Control, or similar). Without camber adjustment, the 9.5" front will contact the inner fender at full compression with wide tires.
Why this setup: The E46 M3 in factory form suffers from significant understeer, especially with worn rear subframe bushings (a common issue on 20+ year-old cars). A square setup addresses this by putting equal grip at both axles, creating a more neutral, exploitable balance. The 18" diameter provides more sidewall for curb compliance on rough track surfaces, and the taller tire profile creates a slightly softer carcass that's more forgiving when learning the car's limits. Running square also means you can rotate tires — a real advantage when burning through 200TW rubber at track events.

E46 M3 Tire Selection Guide
The E46 M3's naturally aspirated S54 engine loves to rev, and the car's lightweight construction makes it extremely responsive to tire upgrades.
- Street Performance: Michelin Pilot Sport 4S (245/35R19 + 275/30R19) — the best all-around street tire. Excellent wet grip, low noise, and a predictable, progressive breakaway that matches the M3's playful rear-drive character.
- Street/Track Hybrid: Continental ExtremeContact Sport 02 (255/35R19 + 285/30R19) — slightly more aggressive than the PS4S, with a firmer sidewall that creates sharper turn-in. Excellent value for the performance delivered.
- Track Day (200TW): Toyo Proxes R888R (265/35R18 square) — the workhorse track tire for the E46 M3 community. Consistent grip across a wide temperature range, long wear life, and forgiving breakaway characteristics. Ideal for HPDE events.
- Time Attack: Yokohama Advan A052 (265/35R18 square) — higher peak grip than the R888R, but more temperature-sensitive and faster-wearing. For drivers chasing lap records.
Understanding Offset on the E46 M3
The E46 M3's dramatically different front and rear fender widths create a unique offset challenge — one size does NOT fit all corners.
- Front ET28–ET35: ET30 is the sweet spot for a flush front fitment. The E46 M3's front fenders are narrower than you'd expect, so going below ET25 front risks poking past the fender lip.
- Rear ET20–ET28: ET25 is the standard recommendation. The massive rear flares can swallow wheels with very low offsets — some owners push as low as ET15 with spacers, but this creates extreme stress on wheel bearings and is not recommended for track use.
- Square offset note: If running a square 18x9.5 setup, ET35 all around will sit flush in the front but tucked inboard in the rear (due to the wider rear flares). A 5mm rear spacer brings the rear flush without exceeding safe hub loads.
Bolt Pattern Reminder: The E46 M3 uses the classic 5x120 bolt pattern with a 72.56mm center bore. The rear fenders on the M3 are significantly wider than the non-M E46, requiring completely different, much lower rear offsets. Do not use standard E46 wheel specs on an M3.
