MITSUBISHI LANCER EVOLUTION (EVO 8 / 9 / X) FITMENT
The Lancer Evolution is one of the most capable performance sedans ever built. Born from World Rally Championship competition, the Evo's Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) system — combining an active center differential, active yaw control, and a rear limited-slip — creates cornering capability that defies the car's modest price point. The 4G63 turbocharged inline-four (Evo 8/9) produces 276–291 hp, while the Evo X's 4B11T pushes 291 hp with more modern turbo response. Both demand square setups to protect the center differential from mismatched rolling diameters.

18" Aggressive Square
Maximizing width to exploit the legendary AWD system's traction.

- Street Tires: 265/35R18 Square
- Performance Tires: 275/35R18 Square
Why this setup: ET22 positions the wheel perfectly flush with the Evo's aggressive factory fenders — the car was designed from the factory to look wide and planted, and properly filled fenders complete that vision. The 265/275mm tire width is the sweet spot for the Evo platform — wider tires provide more cornering grip but also create more rolling resistance, which on a 3,500 lb AWD car with ~300 hp is a meaningful trade-off. The Brembo 4-piston front calipers (GSR/MR models) clear all 18-inch designs comfortably.

Why this setup: A lightweight forged 17x9 transforms the Evo's already legendary handling. The S-AWC system was developed for WRC rally cars running on smaller diameter wheels with tall sidewalls — the system's algorithms respond more naturally at 17" than at larger diameters. The 255mm tire provides more than enough grip for the 4G63/4B11T's power output, and the taller 40-series sidewall provides the compliance needed for rough track surfaces and rally-inspired driving.

Evo Tire Selection Guide
- Street Performance: Michelin Pilot Sport 4S (265/35R18 square) — the daily benchmark. Excellent wet grip for a car that sees all weather conditions.
- Track Day (200TW): Yokohama Advan A052 (255/40R17 square) — highest peak grip. The Evo on A052s is one of the fastest AWD cars at any track day event.
- Rally-Cross: BFGoodrich Rival S 1.5 (255/40R17 square) — excellent transient grip for the rapid direction changes that rally-cross demands.
- All-Season: Continental ExtremeContact DWS 06 Plus (265/35R18 square) — for Evo owners who daily their car year-round. Respectable dry grip with cold-weather confidence.
Evo 8/9 vs Evo X — Key Differences
- Brakes: Evo X Brembos are physically larger than Evo 8/9 brakes. The Evo X is tighter at 17" — confirm spoke geometry. Evo 8/9 clears 17" easily.
- Fenders: The Evo X has slightly wider fender flares than the Evo 8/9, providing 2–3mm more outboard clearance.
- AWD system: Both generations require square setups. The Evo X's S-AWC is more sophisticated with electronic yaw control, making it even more sensitive to mismatched rolling diameters.
