BMW E30 M3 FITMENT
The E30 M3 is a homologation special — built to satisfy Group A touring car regulations, with hand-riveted box flares, a race-derived S14 four-cylinder, and a chassis that defined an entire era of motorsport. Unlike the standard E30 (which uses 4x100), the M3 runs a 5x120 bolt pattern, and its widened track and flared fenders allow for significantly wider, lower-offset wheels. These cars are appreciating rapidly, and the right wheel setup honors the car's competition heritage while protecting its value.
Quick Reference
Bolt Pattern: 5x120 | Center Bore: 72.56mm | Hub Type: Conical Seat | Lug Torque: 110 Nm (81 ft-lb)
Important: The E30 M3 uses 5x120 — completely different from the standard E30's 4x100. These are not interchangeable.
17" Staggered — Filling the Box Flares
A staggered 17-inch setup maximizes lip depth in the rear and fills out the E30 M3's iconic box flares perfectly. The low offsets give the car an incredibly muscular stance that honors the homologation bodywork without looking anachronistic. 17 inches is the perfect diameter for this chassis — large enough to clear modern brake upgrades, but small enough to preserve the car's classic proportions.
01
17" Staggered Street
The ultimate period-correct plus-size fitment, utilizing the full width of the box flares.
- Recommended Front: 17x8.5 ET20
- Recommended Rear: 17x9.5 ET20
- Street Tires: 215/40R17 Front, 245/35R17 Rear
- Performance Tires: 225/40R17 Front, 255/35R17 Rear
Why this setup: ET20 on both axles takes full advantage of the E30 M3's flared fenders, pushing the wheel face outward to sit flush with the fender lip. The 9.5" rear creates beautiful deep concavity in the rear wheel well — a look that's unique to the E30 M3 and can't be replicated on the standard E30's narrower body. The stagger also biases grip to the rear, which helps the S14's 200 hp put power down efficiently through the rear axle. On a car this light (~2,800 lbs), the wider rear tire makes a meaningful difference in traction out of corners.
17" Square — Track & Vintage Racing
For owners who race their E30 M3 in vintage BMW events, time attack, or simply want the most balanced handling possible, a square 17-inch setup is the definitive performance configuration. Equal-width tires allow rotation, reduce understeer, and create a perfectly neutral chassis balance.
02
17" Square Track Setup
A neutral handling configuration that still provides a completely flush look thanks to the flared fenders.
- Recommended Size: 17x8.5 ET20 all around
- Track Tires (200TW): 235/40R17 Square
- R-Compound: 245/40R17 Square
Why this setup: The E30 M3's legendary handling balance is its defining characteristic — a square setup preserves and amplifies this. Running equal-width 235-section tires at all four corners creates a car that rotates on throttle with perfect predictability. For vintage racing series that restrict tire widths or mandate square setups, this is the go-to configuration. A forged 17x8.5 at this offset can weigh under 15 lbs — on a 2,800 lb car, the improvement in steering feel and brake response is dramatic.

E30 M3 Tire Selection Guide
The E30 M3 is light, precise, and extremely responsive to tire changes. Choosing the right compound transforms the driving experience.
- Street Performance: Michelin Pilot Sport 4S (215/40R17 + 245/35R17) — the modern benchmark. Exceptional grip, low noise, and a progressive breakaway that matches the E30's communicative chassis.
- Canyon/Spirited: Continental ExtremeContact Sport 02 (225/40R17 + 255/35R17) — firmer sidewall for sharper turn-in. Excellent dry grip at an accessible price point.
- Track Day (200TW): Toyo Proxes R888R (235/40R17 square) — consistent, durable, and predictable. The perfect track tire for a car you also need to drive home.
- Vintage Racing: Hoosier R7 (235/40R17 or 245/40R17 square) — the fastest DOT-legal option. Used by serious vintage racers who need maximum grip in competition.
Protecting Your Investment
E30 M3 values have risen dramatically — clean examples now command $60,000–$150,000+. When choosing wheels, consider:
- Reversibility: Avoid setups that require permanent fender modifications. ET20 with the recommended widths achieves a perfect flush stance on factory fenders without rolling, pulling, or cutting.
- Period-correct aesthetics: Mesh and multi-spoke designs complement the E30 M3's angular DTM heritage. Avoid overly modern designs that clash with the car's 1980s character.
- Lightweight construction: The E30 M3 was designed as a lightweight racing platform. Heavy cast wheels undermine the car's core engineering philosophy. Forged construction honors the original intent.
