TOYOTA GR86 & SUBARU BRZ FITMENT

The second-generation GR86 and BRZ are purpose-built driver's cars. At roughly 2,800 lbs with a naturally aspirated boxer engine, rear-wheel drive, and a near-perfect 53/47 weight distribution, these cars reward precision over brute force. The right wheel setup amplifies everything the platform does well — crisp turn-in, exploitable oversteer, and a connection to the road that heavier cars simply can't replicate. Lightweight forged wheels are the single most transformative upgrade for the GR86/BRZ chassis.

Quick Reference
Bolt Pattern: 5x100  |  Center Bore: 56.1mm  |  Hub Type: Conical Seat  |  Lug Torque: 103 Nm (76 ft-lb)
Important: The GR86/BRZ uses 5x100 — this is NOT the same as the WRX/STI (5x114.3). Do not cross-shop wheels between these platforms.

18x9.5 — Flush Street Standard

18 inches is the sweet spot for the GR86/BRZ platform. It fills the fenders without adding excessive unsprung weight, and the tire selection for 18-inch performance tires is excellent. A square setup (same size all four corners) maximizes tire rotation life and provides balanced grip front to rear — ideal for a rear-drive chassis where predictable balance matters more than raw traction.

01

18" Flush Square

The definitive street setup for the GR86/BRZ. Balanced, aggressive, and perfectly proportioned.

  • Recommended Size: 18x9.5 ET38 all around
  • Street Tires: 245/40R18 or 255/35R18 Square
  • Performance Tires: 255/35R18 Square
  • Offset Range: ET35–ET40 works well. Below ET30 requires fender modifications or rolling.

Why this setup: The 255-width tire on a 9.5" wheel provides a massive upgrade over the factory 215-width tire — nearly 20% more contact patch. On a lightweight RWD car with 228 hp, this transforms the traction equation entirely. The car hooks up harder out of corners, reduces wheel spin in 2nd gear pulls, and the wider tire provides significantly more feedback through the steering. Running a square setup also means you can rotate tires front-to-rear, which doubles tire life for daily-driven cars.

17x9 — Lightweight Track Weapon

For dedicated track use, autocross, and time attack, 17-inch wheels are the gold standard. They clear the factory brakes with room to spare, dramatically reduce unsprung weight, and unlock access to purpose-built track tires in stiff sidewall constructions designed for high-speed cornering.

02

17" Lightweight Track Square

Prioritizes response, tire rotation, and pure lap time over street aesthetics.

  • Recommended Size: 17x9 ET35 all around
  • Track Tires (200TW): 245/40R17 or 255/40R17 Square
  • R-Compound: 255/40R17 Square

Why this setup: A forged 17x9 wheel in this application can weigh under 16 lbs — compared to the factory cast 18" wheel at 22+ lbs, that's a 6+ lb savings per corner. On a 2,800 lb car, this is transformative. The taller 40-series sidewall provides more deflection for absorbing curbing and rough track surfaces, protecting both the tire and your investment. The taller sidewall also creates a slightly softer tire carcass, which is more forgiving when learning the car's limits at the track.

GR86/BRZ Tire Selection Guide

On a lightweight, naturally aspirated sports car, tire choice has a bigger impact on performance than almost any bolt-on modification.

  • Street Performance: Michelin Pilot Sport 4S (245/40R18 or 255/35R18) — the benchmark. Exceptional wet and dry grip with low road noise. The 245-width version is the perfect daily tire for this platform.
  • Street/Track Hybrid: Continental ExtremeContact Sport 02 (255/35R18) — excellent value. Slightly firmer sidewall than the PS4S, which creates crisper turn-in. A great choice for canyon driving and occasional track days.
  • Track Day (200TW): Hankook Ventus RS4 (245/40R17 or 255/40R17) — the GR86/BRZ community's go-to track tire. Consistent grip, excellent wear life, and affordable enough to use as a dedicated track set.
  • Time Attack: Yokohama Advan A052 (255/40R17) — highest peak grip in the 200TW class. When paired with a sub-16 lb forged wheel, this combination is genuinely competitive in time attack events.
  • Autocross: BFGoodrich Rival S 1.5 (245/40R17) — the dominant autocross tire for the platform. Massive grip, fast warmup, and consistent performance over short high-intensity sessions.

Understanding Offset on the GR86/BRZ

The GR86/BRZ has relatively narrow fenders compared to widebody sports cars, so offset selection requires more precision.

  • ET35–ET40: The safe, flush range for stock-height cars. ET38 is the sweet spot — the wheel lip aligns with the fender edge for a clean, OEM+ appearance.
  • ET25–ET33: Aggressive territory. The wheel will poke past the fender line, which requires fender rolling or pulling. This creates a dramatic stance but introduces potential rubbing at full compression.
  • ET42–ET48: Conservative territory. The wheel sits inboard of the fender line, creating a "tucked" appearance. Useful if you're running coilovers at an aggressive drop where inner fender clearance becomes the limiting factor.
  • Width impact: Moving from 9" to 9.5" wide adds ~6.35mm of outboard wheel face. If you're switching from a 9" ET35 to a 9.5" ET38, the outer lip sits in roughly the same position — the extra offset compensates for the extra width.
