MAZDA MIATA (ND) FITMENT

The Mazda MX-5 Miata ND is arguably the purest modern sports car on the market. At just over 2,300 lbs, every component choice has a magnified effect on how the car drives — and wheels are the single most impactful upgrade you can make. Grip Theory forged wheels drastically reduce rotational inertia, transforming steering feel, acceleration, braking, and the car's signature playful character. When it comes to a car this light, unsprung mass is everything.

Quick Reference
Bolt Pattern: 4x100  |  Center Bore: 54.1mm  |  Hub Type: Conical Seat  |  Lug Torque: 108 Nm (80 ft-lb)

The 4x100 Bolt Pattern

Like the legendary NA and NB generations, the ND Miata uses a 4x100 bolt pattern. This is a crucial detail — the NC generation briefly switched to 5x114.3, so if you're cross-shopping wheels, make sure they're 4x100 for the ND. All Grip Theory wheels for the ND are precision-machined for this hub.

17x9 — The Track Holy Grail

For dedicated track use, aggressive canyon carving, or autocross, the 17x9 square setup is the undisputed holy grail for the ND chassis. This is the size that Spec Miata racers, time attack drivers, and serious enthusiasts converge on — and for good reason.

01

17x9 Track Standard

Massive mechanical grip without destroying the car's naturally playful, tail-happy nature.

  • Recommended Size: 17x9 ET45 all around
  • Track Tires (200TW): 245/40R17 Square — the go-to size for maximum footprint
  • R-Compound: 245/40R17 or 255/40R17 Square
  • Fitment Note: Requires -2° to -3° of front camber and a fender roll (or pull) depending on tire brand. Wider 255-width tires will require more aggressive fender work.

Why this setup: The 17x9 square setup transforms the Miata from a playful roadster into a genuine corner-carving weapon. The 245-width tire provides a 40% wider contact patch than the factory 205-width tire — all while keeping the wheel small enough to preserve the car's gearing, lightweight ethos, and tiny visual proportions. On a 2,300 lb car, a forged 17x9 wheel can weigh under 15 lbs, creating a night-and-day difference in steering response and braking feel compared to the factory cast wheel.

17x8 — The No-Fuss OEM+ Upgrade

If you don't want to roll your fenders or run aggressive alignment settings, stepping up to a 17x8 from the factory 17x7 is a massive visual and dynamic upgrade. This is the setup for daily drivers who want a cleaner look and better handling without modifying the car's bodywork.

17x8 Street Performance

A direct, no-rub bolt-on fitment that dramatically improves both aesthetics and handling.

  • Recommended Size: 17x8 ET35 or ET40 all around
  • Street Tires: 215/45R17 or 225/45R17 Square
  • Performance Tires: 225/45R17 Square

Why this setup: The wider 8" wheel provides significantly better sidewall support than the narrow factory 7" wheel, which sharpens turn-in response immediately. ET35 pushes the wheel out flush with the fender without requiring body modification — it's a true bolt-on transformation. The extra inch of width also means you can run a 225-width tire without the tire sitting on a too-narrow wheel, which eliminates the vague, disconnected feeling of a stretched tire.

15x8 — Lightweight Autocross Weapon

For autocross competitors in stock or street-class categories, a 15x8 setup is the secret weapon. The dramatically reduced diameter shrinks the wheel's moment of inertia, making the car change speed faster — both accelerating and decelerating. The taller 50-series sidewall also provides excellent curb and cone compliance.

03

15x8 Autocross Setup

Maximum rotational weight savings for the ultimate in responsiveness.

  • Recommended Size: 15x8 ET30 all around
  • Autocross Tires: 205/50R15 or 225/45R15 Square
  • Brake Note: Requires confirming clearance with your specific brake setup. Factory base brakes clear 15" wheels. Brembo-equipped models and most aftermarket big brake kits require 17" minimum.

Why this setup: On a car as light as the Miata, the difference between a 15" and 17" wheel is dramatic. A forged 15x8 can weigh under 11 lbs — that's less than half the weight of many factory 17" cast wheels. The result is a car that feels telepathically responsive, changes direction with zero lag, and stops noticeably shorter.

Miata Tire Selection Guide

On a car this light, tire choice has a bigger impact on lap times than almost any other modification.

  • Street Performance: Michelin Pilot Sport 4S (215/45R17 or 225/45R17) — the daily benchmark. Low noise, great wet grip, and a predictable breakaway that matches the Miata's forgiving chassis.
  • Canyon/Spirited: Continental ExtremeContact Sport 02 (225/45R17) — slightly more aggressive sidewall than the PS4S, with excellent dry grip and strong value for money.
  • Track Day (200TW): Hankook Ventus RS4 (245/40R17) — the Miata community's go-to track tire. Consistent grip, long wear life, and affordable enough to burn through on practice days without guilt.
  • Time Attack: Yokohama Advan A052 (245/40R17) — highest peak grip in the 200TW class. Transforms the Miata into a genuine time attack contender.
  • Autocross: BFGoodrich Rival S 1.5 (205/50R15 or 225/45R15) — the dominant autocross tire for the Miata in SCCA and NASA classes.
Brake Clearance: If your ND is equipped with the factory Brembo brake package (available on Club and LE trims) or an aftermarket big brake kit, our GT-02 and GT-03 designs offer exceptional spoke clearance to ensure everything fits perfectly. Always confirm spoke-to-caliper clearance when running 15" or 16" wheels.
