TOYOTA MR2 (SW20 / ZZW30) FITMENT
The mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive MR2 requires staggered wheel setups to maintain its delicate handling balance. The 2nd-gen SW20 (1990–1999) and 3rd-gen ZZW30 MR2 Spyder (2000–2007) are fundamentally different platforms. Since these are light, mid-engine cars, lightweight wheels and staggered widths are critical to prevent snap oversteer.
Quick Reference
SW20 Bolt Pattern: 5x114.3 | Center Bore: 60.1mm
ZZW30 Bolt Pattern: 4x100 | Center Bore: 54.1mm
Bolt Pattern Warning: The SW20 uses 5x114.3 while the ZZW30 uses 4x100. Wheels are NOT interchangeable between generations. Staggered tire setups (wider in the rear) are mandatory for both generations to maintain safe handling balance.
17" Staggered — SW20 Street Standard
The definitive wheel setup for the SW20 Turbo and NA, providing the best balance of tire selection and aesthetic proportions.
01
17" Flush Stagger (SW20)
Clean, period-correct aesthetics with modern tire sizes.
- Recommended Front: 17x8 ET35
- Recommended Rear: 17x9 ET35
- Street Tires: 215/40R17 Front, 245/40R17 Rear
Why this setup: ET32–ET38 is the safe range. The SW20 has surprisingly accommodating rear fenders but tight front clearance. A staggered tire setup (wider in the rear) is mandatory to maintain the car's handling balance and prevent dangerous snap oversteer. 17-inch wheels allow for modern ultra-high-performance tires.
16"/17" Staggered — SW20 Track Focus
For dedicated track use, stepping down to a 16-inch front wheel reduces unsprung weight and rotational inertia for sharper turn-in.
02
16/17" Track Stagger (SW20)
A classic JDM track staggered diameter setup.
- Recommended Front: 16x8 ET35
- Recommended Rear: 17x9 ET35
- Track Tires (200TW): 225/45R16 Front, 245/40R17 or 255/40R17 Rear
Why this setup: Using a smaller front wheel reduces weight at the front axle where the car is already very light. The larger rear wheel accommodates wider tires for putting the turbocharged power down out of corners. This is a proven setup for time attack and HPDE.
