MAZDA RX-7 (FD3S) FITMENT

The FD3S RX-7 is one of the most beautiful cars ever designed — its flowing, organic body lines are unlike anything else on the road. Under the hood, the legendary 13B-REW twin-turbo rotary engine produces 255 hp in a chassis weighing just 2,800 lbs, creating a power-to-weight ratio that embarrassed much more expensive exotics in its era. The rotary engine's unique characteristics — ultra-high RPM, low displacement, minimal rotational mass — make it extraordinarily sensitive to unsprung weight changes. Why this setup: ET35 is the sweet spot for the FD — it positions the wheel flush with the fender lip without risking contact with the fragile fiberglass front fenders. Going below ET30 risks cracking the front fender liners, which are expensive and difficult to source for these appreciating JDM classics. The 9" front and 10" rear creates a subtle stagger that matches the FD's design language — the rear haunches are slightly wider than the front, and the 1" width difference fills them proportionally. On a 2,800 lb car with 255 hp, the 245/265mm tire combination provides more grip than the engine can overwhelm — the FD is about balance and precision, not raw traction.

  • Budget Track: Hankook Ventus RS4 (255/40R17 square) — affordable, consistent, durable. Ideal for building seat time.

Protecting an Appreciating Classic

  • Fiberglass fenders: The FD's front fenders are NOT steel — they're fiberglass-reinforced plastic. Contact with wheels/tires will crack them. Replacement fenders are increasingly scarce and expensive. Always err on the side of conservative fitment.
  • Coilover sensitivity: The FD's suspension geometry changes dramatically with ride height. Always re-check wheel clearance after any coilover adjustment.
  • Reversibility: On a car appreciating as rapidly as the FD, choose setups that don't require fender rolling, pulling, or cutting.
